Offline and installing#

Careers@GFTV keeps what you have already opened, so a lost connection means you can carry on reading instead of meeting a browser error. It can also be installed to a home screen and opened like an app.

What is kept#

  • The pages of the site you have opened, including the job board, the postings themselves, and your account pages.
  • Postings you have opened, about a hundred of them. When the list is full, the ones you looked at longest ago make way first.
  • Your own account data: your applications, your saved roles, and your outstanding tasks, as last loaded. Each page says which day the copy was saved on and that nothing on it can be changed until you are back online.

That data is held on the device, for the account that was signed in, and it is cleared when you sign out.

What needs a connection#

The site says so on the control itself instead of failing quietly:

  • Signing in. Everything you have already opened is still readable while you are signed out of the network, but not of the site.
  • Applying, which opens the role's own application form on Google.
  • Changing your picture, because the file is sent to us.
  • Replying to a task.

What the offline pages look like#

  • A banner at the top saying you are offline, and that anything you have already opened is still there to read. There is a second version of it for when your connection is fine and Careers@GFTV cannot be reached. That one links to the status page.
  • An offline page for an address that was never saved. It says nothing has gone wrong and nothing has been lost. It lists the roles you can still read and your saved roles, and offers to try the page again.

The two things that send themselves later#

You may answer the panel after applying with no connection. Both halves of it, the rating and the Yes or No, are saved on your device and sent by themselves when the connection comes back.

A queued answer is waiting, not done. It does not count as an application until the server confirms it, and it does not start the three month wait before then. The Apply control says it is waiting to be sent.

Nothing else is ever queued. A reply to a task is a free text answer to a question that may have changed by the time it is sent. So the site disables that control offline, and says why.

When a new version is ready#

A new version of the site never swaps itself in under you. A small bar appears saying a new version is ready, with Reload and Not now. The swap happens when you press Reload.

This matters if you are halfway through reading a posting. Nothing changes beneath you, and pressing Not now costs you nothing beyond seeing the bar again later.

Installing it#

Careers@GFTV can be installed to a home screen or a desktop, where it opens in its own window with its own icon.

There is no install button on the site. Use your browser's own control, which differs by browser:

The menu offers Add to Home screen or Install app while you are on the site. Some versions show a prompt in the address bar instead.

An installed copy is the same site. It works offline exactly as the tab does, and it needs a connection for the same four things.

If offline reading is not working#

The site has to have been opened at least once with a connection before any of this exists. Some browsers also switch it off in private windows. If you have opened a page before and it still refuses offline, see Troubleshooting.
